Where we inspect
Eight cities, eight different mixes of housing. The age of the buildings and the ground they sit on decide what we look at most closely.
- Vancouver
- Character houses, Vancouver Specials, 1990s wood-frame condos and downtown towers. Four different jobs under one name.
- Burnaby
- Hills, post-war bungalows, 1970s split-levels and a lot of strata buildings, from low-rise walk-ups to towers.
- Richmond
- Flat, low and close to the water table. Slabs, crawl spaces, drainage and settlement matter more here than anywhere else we work.
- North Vancouver
- Mountain slopes, creeks and a lot of mid-century post-and-beam houses. Water moves downhill here, and so does the ground.
- West Vancouver
- Big houses on steep, rocky lots, close to salt water and creeks. Retaining walls, decks and flat roofs take most of the attention.
- Surrey
- Newer subdivisions, big townhouse complexes and a lot of basement suites. Mostly 1990s and later, so warranty and Poly-B questions come up.
- Coquitlam
- A French-Canadian mill town, 1970s suburbs, new construction on Burke Mountain and condos around the SkyTrain.
- New Westminster
- The oldest city in the region, with Victorian and Edwardian houses on a steep hill above the river, and newer towers by the water.
